Fried Trout

 

Fried Trout is a wonderful way to finish your trout for a delicious and tasty meal.  After catching your trout fish you will want to make sure you clean it first.  To directions on cleaning it go here.  After cleaning it you will want to fillet the fish so you have the nice fillet meat to work with.  If you have already filleted your fish and frozen it then just take it out of the freezer a couple of hours before cooking to let it thaw naturally.  Of course you can cook your fish any way, but some of the purists say that fried trout is the only way to cook it to release all of the flavor of the fish and the only way to enjoy your fish to the max.

 

Some people will say that fried trout is not quite as good for you as grilled, broiled or baked trout.  Even though this holds a little truth, it is only slightly so and fried trout is still highly nutritional and still wonderfully high in omega-3 acids.  Another plus is the amazing taste that fried trout can bring, one that everyone will love!

 

Items/Tools you will need:

 

  1. Heavy Cast Iron Pan (Otherwise a Non-Stick Frying Pan will work)
  2. Cooking Fork or Slotted Spatula
  3. Sharp Knife
  4. Cutting Board

 

 

Food items:

 

  1. Trout
  2. Butter
  3. Flour
  4. Salt and Pepper

 

Optional:

 

  1. Garlic
  2. Onion Powder
  3. Parsley

 

When you have all of your tools and ingredients gathered you are ready to start.

 

Preparation:

 

  1. Rinse your trout under cold running water
  2. Pat dry
  3. Place your trout on the cutting board and cut them with the sharp knife into 6 oz pieces no thicker than one inch.
  4. Season the flour with salt and pepper to taste
  5. Optionally you can add other ingredients in the flour here like garlic, onion powder or parsley.
  6. Roll the trout pieces in the seasoned flour until they are completely covered in the mixture
  7. Put four tablespoons of butter into the frying pan on medium-high heat until the butter starts bubbling.  (Note: do not heat the butter too high or too long or it will turn brown and burn)
  8. Lay the fish in the pan and cook for 5 minutes
  9. Turn the fish over with the slotted spatula or cooking fork and cook for 5 more minutes.
  10. At this point the fish should be perfectly done.  You can tell when your fried trout is done as the fish will be opaque and very moist.  The fish meat should flake off easily.
  11. Remove the fried trout from the pan and drain on paper towels.

 

*Note:  Using tongs on your fried trout may break the breaded coating during cooking, use a cooking fork or slotted spatula instead.

Now your trout is finished.  It should be smelling so good and almost leaping off of the plate into your mouth.  You can serve your fried trout with corn-on-the-cob and homemade coleslaw for a perfect meal.  Of course homemade biscuits would round out the meal perfectly.  Don’t forget to serve your fried trout with a slice of lemon for a fresh taste!
